Nobody knows where or when belly dance originated but we do know that it is very old and every culture has their own style. Today belly dance gives the female body legitimization to be "round" in contrast to the modern preferences of a flat stomach. It brings about the strengthening, reshaping, and renewed acceptance of ones body along with the satisfaction of new levels of physical movement and a greater freedom and range of self expression.
Belly dancing also brings health benefits for your body, mind and soul. It's a fantastic workout and when done right, there is relief of back pain and a working of muscles that usually lay dormant allowing you to rejuvenate your mind and soul in a relaxing, fun environment.
*While there are no specific clothing requirments, keep in mind you want to be comfortable. Instructor must be able to see that knees are bent and proper posture is being formed when standing and in movement so avoid anything too baggy. Instructor must also be able to see your feet so keep in mind this dance is normally done bare footed or with specific belly dance shoes.
