Centre's 9 Foot Grand to be Restored
Like any demanding business, equipment wears out after time and the North Peace Cultural Centre is no different. Fundraising will begin very soon for the restoration of the 1953 Baldwin 9' Concert Grand Piano.
The instrument is the predecessor to Baldwin's current flagship Concert Grand Piano the SD10. “I am still checking, but I don't think there are many venues in BC that can boast owning a 9 foot grand. We are extremely lucky, especially the children that get to play on it during concerts and festivals.” says Gordon Grant. According to the Centre, the instrument is playable, but it is slowly deteriorating. It has cracks in the sound board, the pin block needs to be replaced and the finish is in extremely bad shape. However, the Centre was pleased to find out that the keyboard's original ivory (real ivory by the way) is in excellent shape and will remain. The Centre has two detailed analysis and will soon decide on the contractor. However, the Society will not contract the work until all the funds have been raised. “We are looking at about $50,000 to $52,000 to rebuild it. To replace it, $140,000 to $160,000” states Grant. The instrument will be torn down to its basic components and rebuilt from the ground up. “Like rebuilding that great classic car, everything will be as good or better then the original.” remarks Grant.
The campaign is just beginning and will focus on the sponsor of eighty-eight piano keys. Each key is worth $600 and the sponsors name will be placed on a special plaque to be displayed in the Concourse. As well, each $600 donation will be eligible for a commemorative “hammer” from the original piano, as all new ones will be installed in the instrument. “You can own a little slice of history.” says Grant, “Perhaps your son or daughter played on the instrument over the years and you can a have a little piece of it for your mantle.”
The North Peace Cultural Society will be on hand to accept “key” sponsorships as well. You can also drop into the Centre at the corner of 100th and 100th or call (250) 785-1992 to donate at anytime.
